  • The City of Dublin Dedicates Rediscovered Historical Black Cemetery

The City of Dublin welcomed the community to a dedication ceremony for the Brown-Harris Cemetery, which had been rediscovered during a land survey near Shier Rings Road.
After the historically Black cemetery was uncovered in 2020, the City of Dublin partnered with the Brown and Harris families and engineering firm EMH&T to preserve the site and create a monument that properly illustrated the space’s significance and importance to Dublin’s history.

The dedication ceremony on June 28 marked the culmination of years of strategic restoration and preservation efforts. It coincided with the time of year when the country focuses on commemorations and celebrations of Juneteenth and African American history.

Located at 6540 Shier Rings Road, the cemetery includes at least 22 confirmed graves. It had been lost in the early 1920s, but the rediscovery was prompted by the finding of a grave marker from 1854, shedding light on the land’s true purpose.

The dedication ceremony took place at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 28, at 6540 Shier Rings Road, Dublin.
