ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Chris Apfelstadt is the founder of Light Up Columbus, an award-winning outdoor lighting design firm known for its creativity, craftsmanship, and ability to transform spaces through light. With more than two decades of experience in outdoor lighting, Chris approaches every project as both a designer and an artist, using light as his medium to create environments that inspire and delight. Light Up Columbus operates with a singular mission: Bring Joy Through Light.
 

Under Chris’s leadership, Light Up Columbus has earned national recognition, with work featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, Forbes, and numerous other local and national publications. Chris and his team have received multiple international lighting design awards, including “Best in Show” at the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) International Lighting Design Awards in 2024, 2025, and 2026.
 

Chris grew up in Dublin, Ohio and graduated from Dublin Scioto High School in 2000. He attended The Ohio State University, where after exploring several academic paths, he ultimately earned a degree in Entrepreneurship from the Fisher College of Business. While still in college, Chris launched his first company, College Care Painting, and began offering professional holiday lighting during the slower winter months. After selling the painting business, Chris focused his full attention on growing Light Up Columbus into a year-round lighting company specializing in architectural, landscape, and event lighting design.
 

Chris serves as the Vice President of the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP), where he helps advance education, design excellence, and innovation within the outdoor lighting industry. He is also a mentor at the International Institute of Landscape Lighting (ILLI), where he helps teach an intensive course on high-level lighting design to international students.

Chris and his wife, entrepreneur Becca Apfelstadt, are proud parents of three children. After beginning their family in Clintonville, the Apfelstadts returned to their hometown of Dublin, Ohio, where they now live near the Columbus Zoo.
